Treat Your Pain and Inflammation with Low Level Laser Therapy

Did you know you can use low-energy laser beams to accelerate your healing process?

It’s true! Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-energy laser beams to stimulate the healing process in damaged cells. The therapy is available at Park North Physical Therapy and our team uses it to help alleviate pain, inflammation and promote tissue repair in patients with musculoskeletal injuries.

How Low Level Laser Therapy Works

LLLT uses a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by the cells in the body. This energy then stimulates the cells to produce more energy, which in turn helps to repair damaged tissue. The therapy can also help to reduce inflammation and pain by decreasing the amount of inflammatory chemicals in the body.

Good news! Patients are happy to learn that LLLT is a relatively painless treatment because, unlike other forms of therapy like surgery or corticosteroid injections, LLLT does not cause any damage to the skin or surrounding tissue. This makes it an ideal treatment option for patients who are not suitable for other forms of therapy, or who are recovering from surgery.

What Conditions are Treated with Low Level Laser Therapy?

LLLT can be used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Tendinitis and tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain

Introducing MedX Laser Therapy at Park North PT

Park North PT uses a very specific application of LLLT with MedX laser therapy in order to get the best outcomes for our patients. MedX is a FDA cleared laser device that uses a specific wavelength of red and near-infrared light to penetrate deep into the tissue, stimulating the healing process. The device is designed to be used in the physical therapy’s clinical setting and is best administered by our expert teams of physical therapists..

The MedX laser is used to treat chronic and acute pain, inflammation and tissue repair. In our experience, it is an effective solution for improving the range of motion and function in patients with the musculoskeletal injuries listed above. Plus - it’s an easy, non-invasive procedure! The therapy is typically administered in a series of sessions, with each session only lasting around 10-15 minutes.

The Research Behind Low Level Laser Therapy Results

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been extensively studied and has been shown to be an effective treatment option for a variety of conditions. Let’s review some recent results:

  • A meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials found that LLLT was effective in reducing pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The study found that LLLT reduced pain by an average of 2.24 points on a 10-point visual analog scale (VAS).
  • A randomized controlled trial of LLLT for the treatment of rotator cuff tendinitis found that patients who received LLLT had a greater improvement in pain and function compared to a control group.
  • Another randomized controlled trial found that LLLT was effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with plantar fasciitis. The study found that LLLT reduced pain by an average of 3.3 points on a 10-point VAS.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of LLLT for the treatment of low back pain found that LLLT was effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with chronic low back pain.
  • A study of LLLT for the treatment of neck pain found that patients who received LLLT had a greater improvement in pain and function compared to a control group.

It's important to note that studies on LLLT are ongoing and results may vary depending on the condition, the intensity and duration of the treatment, the type of laser used and the individual patient.
